The Dufuna Canoe was discovered by a local Fulani herdsman named Mallam Yau in 1987, in a village called Dufuna in Fune Local Government Area of Yobe State, Nigeria.

The canoe was excavated from a depth of five meters beneath the earth surface and measured 8.4 meters in length, 0.5 meters in width and about 5cm in thickness.

The age of the canoe has been put at about 8000 years old (6000 BC), making it the oldest canoe in Africa and the third oldest on earth.
